  4. What size fan should I buy?

If the fan’s too big, it can make the room chilly (not to mention awkward-looking). Too small, and the fan won’t move enough air. For maximum comfort and efficiency, the right size fan is all about blade span, so follow these basic recommendations:

    • For rooms up to 225 square feet (15' x 15') and larger, use a fan with a blade span of 50", 52", 54", or 56".
    • In rooms up to 144 square feet (12' x 12') we recommend fans with blade spans of 42" or 44".
    • Smaller rooms up to 64 square feet (8' x 8') should use a fan with a 32" blade span.

  5. What size downrod will I need?

It’s a common misperception that downrods increase fan wobble—when in fact they add stability. Our general formula for calculating downrod length: ceiling height (in feet) minus 9' = downrod length. (The formula takes into account the space that the fan takes up.) If your ceiling height is 12 feet, for example, you’ll need a 3-foot downrod to position the fan at 8 feet from the floor. You can also refer to the following chart:

Choose a Downrod length based on Ceiling Height

  6. What direction should my fan turn for summer or winter?

In summer, you want your blades to rotate counter clockwise (“forward” position) to keep you cool. In winter, blades should rotate clockwise (“reverse” position) to push warm air back down from the ceiling.
